Finding similarities between the Spanish words you are learning and English words in your vocabulary is one of the most effective ways of expanding your knowledge of the new language. When you start learning Spanish, many of the words you come across from lesson one look similar in both languages, or even identical: individual, mineral, hora, presentar, teléfono, momento, electrónico, radio, recomendar, salmón, limón, apartamento and countless more. Those will be easy to learn and to remember, and a great boost to your motivation. In my experience both as a Spanish teacher and as a student of foreign languages, what is even more encouraging is finding less obvious connections between words in both languages. For instance, have you noticed that the Spanish word for ‘beef’ and ‘cow’ (vaca) has the same origin as the English word ‘vaccine’?; or are you aware of how many English words share their origin with the Spanish numbers: unity (uno), duo (dos), trio (tres), quartet (cuatro), sexagenarian (seis), September (seven), octopus (ocho), November (nueve), December (diez)?Once you have seen those similarities, you are more likely to remember the new Spanish words without effort because your brain works by making associations. If you have ever tried to learn lists of Spanish words without context or associations you will know what a hopeless endeavor that is. That is why I always teach Spanish vocabulary to my students by connecting the new words to other words they already know. Even if you have only just started learning Spanish, making those connections will be one of your greatest allies. They will save you precious time and energy, and will transform the learning process into a game and an enjoyable challenge. The problem, however, is that if you are a beginner, or even if you have already reached an intermediate level, finding similarities between English and Spanish words might not always be easy. A good Spanish language course, however, should point at those similarities, as well as guide you through the most efficient vocabulary learning techniques. To show you how much faster you can learn new Spanish words by associating them to other words you are familiar with, here are twenty-five everyday Spanish words. In brackets I have given you the English translation and on the right is the English word of the same origin as the Spanish:lavadora (washing machine) – lavatorymicroondas (microwave) – undulatecongelador (freezer) – to congealbebida (drink) – beveragecaña (small beer) – canecopa (glass) – cupmanta (blanket) – mantlevino (wine) – vineyardtinto (red [wine]) – tinctureterraza (balcony) – terracemarisco (shellfish) – marinaquerer (to want) – to querycarne (meat) – carnivoreprimero (first) premiercasa (house) – casinotener (to have) – tenantantes (before) – antenatalequipaje (luggage) – to equiphabitación (room) – cohabitationlavaplatos (dishwasher) – lavatory, platemandar (to order) – mandateordenador (computer) – orderencantado (delighted) – enchantedlibre (vacant) – libertycarta (menu) – cartographyCan you connect other Spanish words you know to English words of the same origin? What about ‘pasillo’, ‘fumador’, ‘último’, ‘pescado’, ‘suavizante’, ‘sombrilla’?

Learn Spanish, If you want to learn Spanish without taking classes, you can make a lot of progress on your own. There are CD’s and audio-books to aid you. There are plenty of books you can buy to help you learn Spanish more easily, as well. A nifty book to have as you learn Spanish is 1001 Most Useful Spanish Words (Beginners’ Guide), by Seymour Resnick. This book lists words by categories such as food, time, and family. The words are also in a dictionary type listing alphabetically. The words are defined and used in a sentence. Popular phrases using the words are given. It is helpful to anyone trying to learn Spanish. Sticking with the numbers theme, there is another book you can get tremendous help from as you learn Spanish. It is called 2000+ Essential Spanish Verbs: Learn the Forms, Master the Tenses, and Speak Fluently, put out by Living Language. This book makes it so easy to learn Spanish verbs; you’ll wonder why you ever thought it would be difficult. It covers conjugations, irregular forms, and teaches you to form tenses. It has answers to many tricky questions on verbs. If you’re a busy sort, maybe you have free time in your car. Learn in Your Car Spanish Complete Language Course is a tool to help you learn Spanish, written by Henry N. Raymond and Oscar M. Ramirez. You just play the CD’s in your car, or anywhere else you’d like to, and repeat after the speaker. The CD’s progress from the easiest to the most advanced. You will learn enough about basic Spanish dialogue to begin to join in conversations with Spanish speaking people. If you’re a stickler for details, you might be interested in a book called Spanish Grammar for Independent Learners, by Arie Vicente. This book covers everything you need to know about grammar. It has all the information neatly arranged for easy access. As you try to learn Spanish, you will come across sentences you just know you don’t have right. This book has a system to troubleshoot your language and help you figure out what you mean to say. For a taste of Spanish literature, try First Spanish Reader: A Beginner’s Dual Language Book, edited by Angel Flores. You will find stories old and new within its pages. You can learn Spanish almost effortlessly by reading these short stories and proverbs. The easiest ones are first, and more difficult verb tenses are used later on. The stories are interesting and make it fun to learn Spanish. The Language Heretic’s Super Crash Course in Spanish Conversation and Culture: GET BY in Spanish in One to Three Weeks is a unique book by L. Adams. It cuts through all the technical aspects of language learning in short order. The focus of the book is simply to give you enough language skills to get you into conversations so that you can learn Spanish from there. It never claims to make you a scholar. With all the books and CD’s on how to learn Spanish, you should be able to find books that will make your study easier. You can check them out at a library, but to get the most good out of them, you usually need to purchase them. However, that’s not much to spend if you want to learn Spanish.

If you are a native English speaker who has never tried to learn a foreign language, you might be surprised to know how easy learning Spanish can be. Many English words have their origin in Latin or Spanish languages, and other English words are similar to their Spanish counterparts. Some Spanish words are easy to learn because the words are the same in Spanish as they are in English. Tortilla, barracuda, mosquito, tobacco, oregano, cargo, siesta, and salsa all mean the same thing in English as they mean in Spanish. You already know some Spanish words. See how easy it is to learn Spanish? An effective way to learn Spanish is to listen to Spanish language lessons on a portable mp3 player. Anywhere you can wear your headphones, this method may be more fitting for you. Learning Spanish audio courses such as Rocket Spanish includes interactive Spanish lessons on cd’s that can be downloaded into your mp3 player for your convenience. In a nutshell, this means listening to dialogue, and then attempting to construe relevant answers and sentences. Many would argue this is the most effective way to learn a new language and the recent surge in language tape sales would suggest as much. If you have a long commute, learning Spanish is an easy way to pass the time while you are driving or just sitting in traffic. The best Spanish lessons instruct you to repeat the Spanish words and phrases after the speaker, followed by a silent pause where you’re supposed to do just that. If you’re alone sitting in the car, that’s a perfect time to perfect your Spanish pronunciation. It’s easy to learn Spanish while you’re multitasking. Reinforce the Spanish you are learning from the learning Spanish podcasts by watching Spanish language television on TV. Most cable and satellite providers broadcast Spanish-speaking TV programming. The Spanish language soap operas, known as telenovelas, are fun to watch, and they are an easy way to learn Spanish. Telenovelas have a melodramatic air to them, and most telenovela characters speak slowly and deliberately, punctuating their dialog with long stretches of silent, brooding looks. You will find that you recognize many of the words they use, and hearing words spoken in context makes Spanish easy to learn. Hopefully this article has been informative, and helpful to you. By acquiring the skill to be able to converse in Spanish, you are able to break the possible language barrier that gives you that much-needed edge in the workforce.

Everyone who is starting out learning the language looks for some easy Spanish to try and get to grips with it. Often they are amazed to discover that it can be a lot easier that they ever imagined.
Spanish and English share common roots with Latin in particular, and to a lesser degree, Greek as well. This means that many of the words simply need a different ending from English to become Spanish – and they will mean exactly the same thing too! Does that sound like easy Spanish? It does and it is.
Take “plastic,” for example. That word becomes “plastico” in Spanish. Well, you wanted easy Spanish, and it surely can’t get any easier than this. When English-speaking people think about learning Spanish they start to see it as one big problem. No hay problema, and if you can’t work out what that Spanish phrase means, then you do have one.
The best way to get to grips with easy Spanish is to learn all the easy words first. The grammar is a little different, but that will follow naturally. Take the phrase mentioned above: “no hay problema. ” It literally means, “not there is problem. ” It won’t take long for anyone to adjust to this way of thinking and make that, “there’s no problem,” its English equivalent. ”
However, let’s stick with the easy Spanish words first. It’s the endings that change in many cases, and it tends to be a regular thing too. As in the example of “plastic” becoming “plastico,” many other words ending in “ic” change to “ico” in Spanish. Clásico, cómico, histérico, metódico, técnico are all examples where you should have little difficulty in guessing what the English equivalent terms are.
It’s not just the “ic” ending words either. Easy Spanish get’s even easier when you bring in all the other groups, such as “abundant” becoming “abundante” in Spanish, “monument” becomes “monumento,” “pianist” becomes “pianista,” “indication” becomes “indicación,” “patent” becomes “patente,” “religious” becomes “religioso. ”
There are even better ones too. Easy Spanish can be very easy at times. How do you spell, “central”? You spell it quite simply as, “central. ” The pronunciation is different from the English (you emphasize the “a” and not the “n”), but it’s delightfully similar and certainly a good example of easy Spanish.
There are others too. Examples include words like, “animal,” “noble,” “admirable,” and “director. ” Usually these kind of words have the same meaning as in English, but sometimes they are a little bit different. The English word, “conductor” applied to a person usually conjures up a picture of someone leading an orchestra. In Spanish it means the driver of a car or other vehicle.
Sometimes easy Spanish needs a little bit of lateral thinking. A car is “coche” in Spanish. You may think at first glance that it’s nothing like the English, but think back to the days of highwaymen roaming the English countryside looking to hold up a coach. Coaches were the cars of those days, and the Spanish word, “coche” is just the modern equivalent.
There certainly are Spanish words that bear no resemblance to their English counterparts, but that’s to be expected; otherwise they would be the same language. Easy Spanish certainly exists, and it’s easy to learn too. Go on, try it!
