Finding similarities between the Spanish words you are learning and English words in your vocabulary is one of the most effective ways of expanding your knowledge of the new language. When you start learning Spanish, many of the words you come across from lesson one look similar in both languages, or even identical: individual, mineral, hora, presentar, teléfono, momento, electrónico, radio, recomendar, salmón, limón, apartamento and countless more. Those will be easy to learn and to remember, and a great boost to your motivation. In my experience both as a Spanish teacher and as a student of foreign languages, what is even more encouraging is finding less obvious connections between words in both languages. For instance, have you noticed that the Spanish word for ‘beef’ and ‘cow’ (vaca) has the same origin as the English word ‘vaccine’?; or are you aware of how many English words share their origin with the Spanish numbers: unity (uno), duo (dos), trio (tres), quartet (cuatro), sexagenarian (seis), September (seven), octopus (ocho), November (nueve), December (diez)?Once you have seen those similarities, you are more likely to remember the new Spanish words without effort because your brain works by making associations. If you have ever tried to learn lists of Spanish words without context or associations you will know what a hopeless endeavor that is. That is why I always teach Spanish vocabulary to my students by connecting the new words to other words they already know. Even if you have only just started learning Spanish, making those connections will be one of your greatest allies. They will save you precious time and energy, and will transform the learning process into a game and an enjoyable challenge. The problem, however, is that if you are a beginner, or even if you have already reached an intermediate level, finding similarities between English and Spanish words might not always be easy. A good Spanish language course, however, should point at those similarities, as well as guide you through the most efficient vocabulary learning techniques. To show you how much faster you can learn new Spanish words by associating them to other words you are familiar with, here are twenty-five everyday Spanish words. In brackets I have given you the English translation and on the right is the English word of the same origin as the Spanish:lavadora (washing machine) – lavatorymicroondas (microwave) – undulatecongelador (freezer) – to congealbebida (drink) – beveragecaña (small beer) – canecopa (glass) – cupmanta (blanket) – mantlevino (wine) – vineyardtinto (red [wine]) – tinctureterraza (balcony) – terracemarisco (shellfish) – marinaquerer (to want) – to querycarne (meat) – carnivoreprimero (first) premiercasa (house) – casinotener (to have) – tenantantes (before) – antenatalequipaje (luggage) – to equiphabitación (room) – cohabitationlavaplatos (dishwasher) – lavatory, platemandar (to order) – mandateordenador (computer) – orderencantado (delighted) – enchantedlibre (vacant) – libertycarta (menu) – cartographyCan you connect other Spanish words you know to English words of the same origin? What about ‘pasillo’, ‘fumador’, ‘último’, ‘pescado’, ’suavizante’, ’sombrilla’?

Many people learn a new language in school. For some it is French, for others it is Spanish. However, if you do not use the language once you graduate, you may find that most of the knowledge is forgotten, and, should you wish to speak the language again, you have to start almost from the beginning again, and re-learn it.

Spanish is a Beautiful Language

It is easier for a child to learn a new language, but adults can do it if they are willing to put some effort into it. Spanish is a beautiful language once you get used to it, and it is spoken all over the world. One thing is for sure, it is well worth the extra effort and well worth learning. You will discover that speaking a second language is a valuable asset to your CV should you ever look for a new job.

But before you dash off on this new challenge, you may want to identify what the easiest way to learn Spanish is and then choose between the different ways of learning. With the latest advancements in technology, there are now a variety of easy ways to learn Spanish. Many options that did not exist before are now at our disposal. Examples of this would include methods such as using DVDs or video. Actually, these both provide the same type of learning experience as if you were in a classroom. All this without having to leave the comfort of your home. You can take it a step further and just pop a CD or cassette in your car stereo which can even help in learning Spanish even while you are on the road.

There are lots of websites that offer free language tips, and you can download language lessons and listen to them on your computer or your MP3 player. There are also more in-depth lessons available for a fee, and language learning programs that use flash cards, images, and videos to help you learn Spanish.

If you prefer assisted learning, you could join a language class at a college, or see if there are any tutors offering private lessons in the area. In this way you get a chance to practice your skills on a real person, and what is more important is that get feedback along the way.

The easiest way to learn Spanish is to go to somewhere that uses the language, perhaps Spain or Mexico, and try to get by on just your Spanish skills while you are there. It is a good idea to at least know a few words before you attempt this, but it will be invaluable practice, and you will likely learn more in a few days on vacation that you would in several months of classroom practice.

If you are very motivated to learn Spanish fast online, then there are several things to think about first. You can learn Spanish quickly if you follow these simple yet important tips. One important thing to remember when you start to learn Spanish online, is to realize what fast or quick actually means. People tackle language learning at different rates, and what might take years for one person to learn may only take an hour for another. Since life is not fair in this respect, it is easy for you to get discouraged and disappointed rather fast. Avoid setting yourself up for failure by making a goal before you start. Since setting up a goal is probably the most important part of learning Spanish, you must take this seriously. It would be very unrealistic to think that you could be holding long complicated conversations in a few weeks. It just will not happen. What you should do is to take a look at the situation that you will be in and see what parts of the language you will be needing to use. For example, it all you are doing is going on a nice relaxing vacation in a Spanish speaking country, then you should concentrate on vocabulary related to things having to do with hotels, restaurants, car rentals, bank machines, directions and tourist spots. If you are suddenly in a situation where you are moving on a long term basis to a foreign country such as Mexico with very little notice, then you will want to focus on all of the above, plus things having to do with grocery stores, opening up bank accounts, situations having to do with immigration and local customs. The reason for this is that it is impossible to learn everything in one shot. What works is to concentrate on a basis of things you will need right away, and then focus on building on that basis slowly. It is easier the longer you are in the Spanish speaking country as total immersion comes into play. Spanish phrase books can be a big help while you are there, so do not be afraid to use them. Remember that your goal is to make sure you are understood. It doesn’t have to be scholastically correct Spanish. One other language learning technique that you can use is to start reading and watching movies in Spanish. The best way to do it is to by a Spanish version of your favorite magazine and just start reading it. Do not make the mistake of having the dictionary next to it. This is the worst thing you could possibly do. Your goal with this is to try and recognize enough key words that you can figure out the basic idea of the story. You can keep note of vocabulary that is new but after you are done reading, then write them down on a list and every few days or so, look them up. The final word is that you can learn Spanish fast online by knowing ahead of time what you realistically can accomplish. Good luck!

Most courses or free online language lessons focus on splitting the learning process into these three categories: basic, intermediate and advanced. But how exactly do you know what category you’re part of at a given moment?

Basic Language Learning

Basic language learning usually consists of getting a solid grip on the base 1000 words of a language. Statistically, most languages use 1,000 words to cover colloquial conversations. Yes, I know it sounds like a small sum of words, since that dictionary on the shelf covers hundreds of thousands of words. If you really don’t believe this and have the time on your hands, compile a list of all the basic words in your native language. Stuff like fruit names, mammals, daily tools, furniture, so forth. No specialized words of course. You’ll notice that it won’t take more than 1,000-1,500 words to cover them, but then again you’ll probably run out of inspiration halfways.

Fortunately, there are books out there that cover these basic 1,000 words for most languages. Just search some free language lessons websites on the Internet, or spend some money and buy these books because they’ll be very helpful. Ok so now you have the list of basic words. But how do you get them from that piece of paper, in your head?

Many will recommend the “phonebook” approach, which would require you to take each word in the list, repeat it a few times in your mind, and then move on to the next. The only problem with this approach is that it sucks. Badly! By the time you’ve covered one quarter of the list of words, you will already forget the first ones you’ve learnt. A way to work around this problem is to take the words in smaller chunks (say 10-20) and put them in a context. Learn the word, say it out loud a few times, see what it means and try to find a context for it.

When you’ve reached 20 words, revise what you’ve learnt and then move on to a new batch. In my experience, this is one of the most efficient ways to improve vocabulary and when you’re done with the basic 1,000 words and a few equally basic structures using them, you can move on to the Intermediate language learning level.

Intermediate Language Learning

Once you’re done with the basics, the next step is understanding what others say. Reading and listening are your friends. Don’t start with hard stuff, obviously; don’t go about reading a newspaper or a magazine in French, when you just barely learnt the base words and some of the easy structures. Try some light stuff at first, some course book texts for beginners, some non-technical articles on the Internet or some translated text. They usually work well, until you can pass on to the harder stuff like newspapers, technical or specialized magazines and even books.

You can also listen to audio tapes or try to figure out what the actors in a foreign movie are saying. This will help you increase your vocabulary even further, familiarize you with the colloquial way of speaking that language and also provide a natural ingredient to the learning process, since so far what you’ve done has been slightly robotic.

Advanced Language Learning

If you’ve reached this stage, you’re most definitely on your way to fluently speaking the language you’ve set out learning. If you can understand most of what’s written in a newspaper, article or book and if you can understand what someone else is saying in that particular language (be it a conversation buddy, a foreigner or an actor on TV) then you can move on to using advanced techniques that will perfect your speech, writing and understanding.

Remember how you’ve learnt 1,000 words in the basic part of your studies? Well by the time you finish the Intermediate part and are able to understand the language properly, you will have most likely increased your word base to 3,000 which makes up for over 90% of normal speech used in almost any language.

So now it’s time to put what you’ve learnt to the test and chisel the new language until you can say that you’re truly fluent in it. Try a conversation with a native, or even better, visit the country of origin for your language. Being in that environment will put your so far theoretical skills to the test and it will be the perfect opportunity to correct all the small mistakes that you’re bound to still stumble upon.
